Massey Ferguson 178 Tractor Parts

The Massey Ferguson 178 built upon the successful heritage of the MF 100 series, offering increased power and capabilities. Produced from 1969 to 1978, it quickly gained favor among farmers for its dependability. The heart of the 178 is a Perkins A4.236 diesel engine, a 236 cubic inch (3.9L) inline 4-cylinder rated at approximately 73 engine horsepower. Some models, primarily for export, featured a gasoline engine option. This engine was paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission (6 forward, 2 reverse) or a Multi-Power transmission offering 12 forward and 4 reverse speeds. The 178’s PTO delivered around 65 horsepower, typically at 540 RPM. The hydraulic system had a capacity of around 8 GPM, powering a 3-point hitch rated as Category II. These features allowed it to handle a wide range of implements from row crop cultivation and hay making to livestock feeding and light tillage work. Compared to the smaller MF 165, the 178 provided more power and lifting capacity, making it suitable for larger farms and heavier workloads.
