The heart of the 168 is a Perkins 4.154 diesel engine, a 4-cylinder engine with a 154 cubic inch displacement and producing approximately 60 engine horsepower. Some earlier models were available with a Continental gas engine option. The tractor featured a gear-type transmission with multiple speed options, typically an 8-speed forward and 2-speed reverse. PTO horsepower was rated at around 53 at 540 RPM. Hydraulic capacity was approximately 7.5 GPM, often with one or two remote valves. The 3-point hitch was a Category I or II, with a lift capacity of around 3500 lbs. The MF 168 was commonly used for row crop work, hay production, livestock operations, and light tillage.
